One such success story is of Shoby Jan, a carpenter’s daughter who lives in Katapora village in Kulgam district of Jammu. She worked hard to improve her family’s situation for their welfare. In her journey she benefited from the Government program in the form of National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) UMEED. The program helped her achieve a stable income for her family and prosperous life.
Today, Shoby Jan is the owner of a business venture called ‘Step In Out Footwear’ in Yaripora. She has engaged her brother who is a graduate in her footwear shop and has become a role model for other women.
She started her journey when she heard about the UMEED scheme which helped women in their economic development through financial schemes. She rushed to avail the benefits offered by the program - UMEED.
She joined a self-help group where she got the initial financial support as a revolving fund of Rs. 15,000. She then availed the Community Investment Fund (CIF) of Rs. 40,000. She got bank linkage and received a fund of Rs. 3 lakh and got Total Capitalisation Support from NRML.
With this money she started her business and also a wood joinery millto to help her father. The business helped her to cope up with the family expenses and also increased her confidence. As her family’s financial situation improved day-by-day she began repaying her loan. She also managed to save some amount of profit daily which helped her expand her business.
Benefit of the program
Today, Shoby is the owner of a footwear shop and also a wood joinery millto which is operated by her father in the village. She has said that the program UMEED is behind her success. She herself feels proud to live a dignified life. Her father manages his business and is a successful carpenter.
She repaid her load to the RF, CIF and bank on time which helped her build good relations with the financial institutions. She has involved her family members to further expand her entrepreneur ventures. The program manager congratulated Shoby for her dedication and consistency in business.
