Manufacturing processes

Before the manufacturing process starts different substances are added to improve the lifespan, appearance and workability of the final product. This process is called compounding. The substances added are plasticisers, stabilisers and dyes and the percentage of these additives is usually low.

Blow moulding

This process is used to produce hollow plastic parts and hollow shapes. In this compressed air is introduced under a warmed sheet of thermoplastic material. This forces the material into the mould cavity allowing it to expand freely into the shape of the mould. Once the plastic cools and hardens it is removed from the mould. This process is used to form large domes.

Extrusion blow moulding

This process is used to make hollow products that have narrow necks. The plastic material is first extruded into a tube shape and put into the mould. The dye is closed to seal the end of the tube. Air is blown and this forces the plastic to take the shape of the mould cavity.

Once the plastic cools and hardens the mould is opened and the part is ejected. This process can be used to produce hollow products like bottles, Jerry cans and more.

Injection moulding

This process is the most common process of manufacturing plastics. The material is used in granular form and heated until it fuses. It is then forced into the closed mould. The fused polymer is viscous in nature; high pressure is required to make it flow. The machine and the mould have to be strong enough to take the force.
